Event 7 (Day 1)
Level 16 (Blinds 2,000/4,000/500)
Total Entries: 113
Players Remaining: 12
There are a couple of players in particular that are pretty happy that Yuebin Guo (Brooklyn, NY) is bagging the chip lead to end the night. Both Oliver Entine and A. Nonymous were sitting with less than (10) big blinds, and in danger of bubbling this event…that was until Guo got involved in a three-way all-in where he covered both players (players with average stacks). Guo would eliminate Michael Melkersen and Adam Feldman in 13th and 14th place respectively, sending the remaining players into the money…and back to their room for some well needed rest.
Day 2 will pick back up tomorrow afternoon at 12:00pm, with (12) players remaining, active on two tables. There will be a redraw for Day 2, but here are the chip counts of those left:
Yuebin Guo – 598,500
Nick Palma – 309,000
Ryan Smith – 303,000
Daniele Nestola – 301,000
Hayden Glassman – 208,000
Dawn Wilno – 151,000
George Sopasakis – 107,500
Darius Studdard – 90,500
Dan Horan – 84,000
Nathan Greenwald – 51,500
Oliver Entine – 33,000
A. Nonymous – 24,000
Level 16 (Blinds 2,000/4,000/500)
Total Entries: 113

The play in Event 7 was scheduled to end about (20) minutes ago, but players agreed that they did not want to leave three away from the money. Chip Average: 51,000
Players are still “mixing” it up over in the entrance portion of the Event Center, as Event 7 (NLH/PLO) is down to 44 players. Each of the six-handed tables has at least one or two notables seated, including Table 18. Half of the table is made up of Nick Palma, Vinny Pahuja, and WPT Borgata Poker Open Champion Anthony Zinno (Boston, MA). That win is the clear highlight of Zinno’s career ($825,099), but what may come as a surprise to those that don’t know him, is the fact that Anthony’s PLO game is just as good as his hold’em. Versed in many different poker variations, Zinno would frequently be spotted playing PLO cash during prior Borgata Poker Open series. He may be at one of the tougher tables in the field, but it hasn’t stopped him from amassing a well above average stack of 125,000.
Some other counts from the field include:
Nick Palma – 135,000
Oliver Entine – 120,000
Yeubin Guo – 94,000
David Fried – 76,000
Joseph Hebda – 63,000
Level 8 (300/600)
Total Entries: 112
Players Remaining: 72
We mentioned earlier in this series how spoiled players were this month at the Borgata, as there is not only a superb “live” tournament line up, with over 20 main events guaranteeing just over $6,500,000 in prize money, another 20 side events, as well as the online Garden State Super Series II brought to players by BorgataPoker.com and partypokernj.
This allows players to grind on the felt during the day and on the screen at night, with most of the GSSS events starting after 6 PM.
But, this also allows players to “multi-table” if they are deep in an event playing into the night or playing an event like the PLO/NLH Six Max that started at 4 PM.
Many players in this field have laptops to the side of them at the table, playing multiple tournaments on the virtual felt, while grinding towards a Borgata Winter Poker Open title.
One player who is always grinding on partypoker.com is team pro Scott Baumstein, who came off a deep PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Main Event run to get to the Borgata in time to fire a bullet in Day 1D of the $2,000,000 GTD Event 1, bagging up a top five stack heading into Day 2.
He parlayed that into a decent score and will look to make deep runs in all the tournaments he’s playing tonight, both online and here in the Event Center.
Level 8 (300/600)
Total Entries: 112
Players Remaining: 72
We saw nearly every “notable” player from the region during last week’s $2,000,000 GTD Event 1, with many of them making the money and making deep runs.
But one player that wasn’t seen was Nick Palma (Bronx, NY) who opted for an extended stay at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, where he cashed in the Main Event and made a deep run in one of the final “Turbo” events of the series.
The two scores would net Palma close to $23,000 in earnings, a decent return on his trip and results that would move him past the $350,000 mark in terms of career tournament winnings.
Palma flew back two days ago, spent a day “getting his haircut and doing his laundry” at home and then came straight to the Borgata, getting here just in time to register for the Event 7 NLH/PLO Six Max event.
Of Palma’s previous 42 rated cashes, only one of them have come in a PLO event, but that doesn’t seem to be hindering him so far today, as he looks to be one of the big stacks in the room back from break, with the tournament field frozen at 112 player.
Palma will certainly be a player to watch this series, as he looks to continue his good start to the new year here at the Borgata.
Level 7 (250/500)
The late registration and re-entry period for the Event 7 NLH/PLO Six Max tournament is about to close as players are headed on their second break of the day.
When the tournament field returns, the field will be frozen and a finalized number of entrants will be posted.
Right now, there are 78 players still alive, but this tournament has seen some crazy play over the first few hours, making us believe that there could be close to 150 entries when it’s all said and done.
One player who is in the field is the defending champion in this event, as Michael Melkerson won this event during the Fall Poker Open.
Melkerson had a superb FPO, cashing multiple times and Final Tabling two consecutive events.
He’s picked up where he left off this series, already having cashed in both Event 1 and Event 4.
He’ll look to make another Winter Poker Open score and perhaps even repeat as NLH/PLO champion as he’s off to a good start, looking like the big stack in the room with just over 100,000 chips.
Level 1 (25/50)
While we are working towards crowning an Event 5 HORSE Champion at one end of the Event Center, another “mix” event is starting up on the opposite side of the room, as the Event 7 NLH/PLO Six Max tournament is about to begin.
This is one event was added to the schedule in September during the WPT BPO and has been a hit ever since, as it one of the crowd favorites.
This tournament will see players start with 20,000 in chips and play 30 minute levels.
There will be unlimited re-entry through Level 6, with late registration open until that time as well.
There are plenty of notable players being seen around the tournament tables and when the Event 5 HORSE tournament ends, we will bring you a list of notables in the field.
Weekends are always busy here at the Borgata, but during Poker Opens, weekends are even busier as many “weekend” warriors come to the preeminent East Coast poker destination for a chance to make a big score, while playing around their busy work or family schedules.
The first weekend of the Winter Poker Open is no different, as there is a huge slate of tournaments, offering a little bit of everything for players, with the Event 6 $100,000 GTD “Saturday Series” taking center stage.
This guaranteed one day tournament usually lasts into the early morning hours of Sunday, but for players making it that deep, it’s well worth the lack of sleep as a simple $400 buy-in can be turned into a massive score.
This is always one of the most well attended tournaments regardless of whether it’s a Borgata Poker Open month or not, with the $100,000 Guaranteed prize pool rarely lasting longer than a few levels and usually doubling in size.
The other tournament starting today in the Event Center is the third “mix” event of the series as the Event 7 $560 PLO/ NLH Six Max tournament will kick off at 4 PM.
This is another tournament that always draws well, as it gives players a chance to play two of the most high action games in poker over the course of a two-day structure.
Rounding out an already busy day are the two tournaments resuming play at 12 PM.
As both the remaining Event 4 Big Stack NLH field and the Event 5 HORSE field are coming back to crown a champion here today.
Event 4 will return with ten eliminations separating that field from the money and the HORSE event will return with a Final Table of nine players, all of which have already locked up a score.
We will be awarding three Winter Poker Open trophies here today, so don’t miss a second of the action by following along with the WPO blog as we will bring you live updates from every event from start to finish.
