Having already amassed 40,000 early, tournament star TJ Shulman was looking to big stack his table, opening the at 100/200. He faced a three bet to 4500 – an outrageous sizing.
Shulman knew exactly which hand lay behind this top-ended protection raise, and decided to try to stack his opponent’s premium.
Shulman hit just the right flop for the suited nut low, , and called a big cbet of 5500.
The turn paired TJ, giving him more equity with one street to come. Now his opponent’s sizing declined precipitously, going a more modest 5500 into over 20,000 pot.
TJ had known this fellow was never folding his premium, but now he changed his mind. “If I ever have fold equity…” he started telling himself.
So aloud he told his opponent, “I know you have aces and I’m all in.”
“I do have aces,” the aggressor said,”and I’m never folding on this board!”
The river bricks for Shulman. But his opponent needled him.
“Would you ever fold aces on the the seven five four…?”
“Buddy…” TJ started, but trailed off and headed to the registration desk, cracked.

The Seniors are off to a slow start, and that’s not due to age. 10am is an early hour for poker players, regardless of their generation.
Last year, the Seniors played for about 12 hours to reach the final seven, who then agreed on adjusted payouts. James Kinney was the chip leader and he took the lion’s share of the remaining prize pool, $8,100 for 1st, along with the trophy. The other six all got the same, a little over $5,200.
A total of 173 entrants created a prize pool of more than $50,000, which was paid out to the final 18 players.

Today the Seniors will be the first of four one-day Main Events to get underway in the Event Center. A perennial favorite, the Seniors Event typically draws a nice crowd. That may be a problem today, depending on how many football fans we have. With two conference championship games playing today, at 3:05pm and 6:40pm, we may have some players stay home to watch.
Rest assured, the games will be on the big screens in the Event Center.
Seniors begin with 15,000 chips and all levels are 30 minutes long. Late registration and unlimited re-entries are available until the start of Level 9, about 2:30pm. This is a one-day event, so they will play until a winner is determined.
Cards and chips are on the move.
