$300+40 Pot Limit Omaha High/Low
Level 23: Blinds 20,000/40,000
Matthew Shoup came into Day 2 5th out of 13 returning players, then took the chip lead in a big pot against chip leader Benjamin Lester. He held that lead most of the day, until he got heads-up with Borgata regular tournament grinder Peter Ippolito, who had gone on a rush, felting the 3rd through 6th place finishers.
He never gave up, however, and caught a big hand to double up, flopping a set and turning a full house. Peter made a valiant effort to claw his way back, but got quartered in an unfortunate hand where both players had the nut low.
This blinds had grown too large and Peter had to put his last chips in even after missing the flop and came up short. Matthew Shoup took 1st place and $9,356, along with his first Borgata title.
Matthew owns a couple of Bait & Tackle stores and doesn’t get to play much during the season, so mostly plays poker in the winter when no one is fishing. They close up the stores and come here to play poker.
Poker isn’t the only type of tournament he has won either. Last year he won a Marlin fishing tournament, catching a 71 pound white marlin!
